I am having trouble getting VSTO to work. When I go into Visual Studio to create the project I get a cryptic error telling me to check for disabled items in Excel (I have none) and then it instructs me to reinstall VSTO.

A classmate suggested that it is because the University edition of Office (Microsoft Office Professional Enterprise Edition 2003) is crippled.

Can anyone confirm if this is so

Thanks,

Michael

According to the Office Web site, that edition will work with VSTO (if it is an academic-license edition): http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/compare.mspx

What version of Visual Studio are you using Also, could you give the exact error message

Thanks Harry,

I am using Visual Studio 2005. Error message below

Project cannot be created because the application add-in is not working correctly and might have been disabled. To check for disabled items in the Microsoft Office application, open the help menu, click About Microsoft Office Word or Microsoft Office Excel, and then click disabled items. If either "Word Visual Studio Design Time Adaptor Add-in" or "Excel Visual Studio Design Time Adaptor Add-in" appears, select it and click Enable. If not, reinstall or repair your installation of Visual Studio Tools for Office.

Obviously, I have checked for disabled items and reinstalled VSTO. I have also been careful to follow the instructions for installing the Office Primary Interop Assemblies.

I was able to get this to work on a co-workers machine, with a regular (non-academic) version of Office.

Hmm, that does sound suspiciously like that version of Office isn't supporting VSTO, which is confusing since the Office site says that it does. A few more questions might help track this down:

1. Which Office application are you using in your project (Word, Excel, or Outlook)

2. When you look at the "About" dialog (by clicking, for example, "About Microsoft Office Word" on the Help menu), what does it say for the version For example, my copy has, up at the top of the dialog, "Microsoft Office Word 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2, Part of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003".

3. Do you have service pack 1 or 2 installed

4. What version of VSTO are you using Are you installing it separately from Visual Studio 2005

I am trying to create an Excel application, but I have also tried to create a Word application.

"Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (11.8012.6568) SP2, Part of Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003"

I have service pack 2 of the OS installed

I'm not sure how to verify the version but the installer says Visual Studio 2005 Tools for the Microsoft Office System. I downloaded it from MSDN last Friday and installed it. Visual Studio was installed several months ago. Here is the dump from the Visual Studio about box.

More info

Not knowing if the academic version is the problem I uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Office using CD from my employer's MSDN subscription. No change, I have precisely the same error. So it would appear that the cause is elsewhere.

Thanks,

Michael

Well Harry, I fixed it. Used a big hammer but it works. I uninstalled and reinstalled Visual Studio and Microsoft Office. Don't know what was broke but it seems to work now. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear that. I was trying to research an answer, but not coming up with other examples of this behavior. Just in case it helps, here's a theory from one of the main developers:

"I think the cause might be that he has a managed COM Add-in registered for Word/Excel and this causes some weird asynchronous host shutdown issues for host application when we create new document during project creation. A workaround would be to create new project based on an existing document."

The main developer's theory didn't help out in my case - I'm getting the same symptoms, so I tried creating a New Project based on an existing document (not create a new doc). Unfortunately, this didn't change anything.

I've even tried manually browsing for the VSTOWordAdaptor.dll in Word's Tools, Templates and Addins menu dialog - however, Word doesn't recognize this file as a Word Add-in when I change the file type to that, and it complains when I try to load it.

I had the exact problem you described.

After a long exhaustive investigation, I found the following solution fix the problem :

1) Go to Control Panel

2) Click Add/Remove programs

3) Select Change or Remove Programs

4) Highlight Microsoft Office

5) Click Change

6) Select Reinstall or Repair

7) Click next

8) Select Detect and Repair error in my Office installation

9) Click install

Works perfectly. Thanks for posting the fix. I wasn't looking forward to reinstalling VS and Office.

I recently installed Office 2007 in addition to Office 2003. That seems to have broken my VSTO. I have now uninstalled Office 2007, Office 2003, and VSTO and reinstalled Office 2003 w/SP2 and VSTO. However I still can no longer create a VSTO Excel project. I get the same error discussed here:

"Project cannot be created because the application add-in is not working correctly and may have been disabled."

I have tried all the work arounds discussed on this thread and am still not having any luck.

When I go into Excel | Tools | Macros | Security, I have enabled "Trust all installed add-ins and templates" as well as "Trust access to Visual Basic project." I have ensured that there are "No disabled items" at the Help | About Excel | Disabled Items.

I am at a loss as to what I should try next.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance. Thanks!
