Vintage Decorating Ideas For Living Rooms
Vintage is huge. Whether in fashion or interior design we're forever looking to the past. Where a few years ago it was all about contemporary and modern styles, with the impact of Mad Men and this year's Great Gatsby remake the fashion world is all aglow with retro.
Both fashion and home interior designers continue to nod to the past, so why shouldn't you follow suit? Here's how to stay right on trend with a vintage living room.
Fireplace Focus
Traditional fireplaces and fireplace surrounds adds a touch of resonance to a vintage living room. Whilst we'd all like to have an open fire in our homes, it's not always practical and affordable. Modern options like contemporary gas fires can achieve the same look and are an easier alternative.
Stone or marble fireplace surrounds will instantly conjure classic Victorian style, but if you want more of a modern twist painted wooden fireplace surrounds are perfect. Opt for a neutral palette in grey or white. Add a shabby, chic mirror or artwork for extra impact.
Vintage Not Old Fashioned
Whilst vintage living rooms use classic touches like fireplaces, retro style furniture and wallpaper it doesn't mean your home has to appear stuffy and old fashioned – you can always make it more modern style vintage with adding a little colour and playing with a contemporary twist. Here we've got a few ideas how to do just that.
Vintage Accessories
To create the perfect vintage look in your living room you'll need an air of formality with a traditional touch, but it also needs to be liveable. Head to some second hand or antique shops and scour them for vintage accessories such as lamps, vases, phones and even tea sets. Sometimes you may come home empty handed, but when you do find some treasure, the hunt will have all been worth it.
Focus on the books
A big bookcase is perfect for a vintage living room. Forget making the TV your focal point – in times gone by all the focus will have been on the books. If your collection is full of hardbacks, for a real vintage look, lose the dust covers and it will be perfect. Opt for a classic freestanding bookcase and it'll be perfect.
Vintage furniture
Dress a corner of the room with a freestanding piece of vintage furniture. What about a classic style armchair? A piece like that really deserves pride of place in your retro living room.
Think floral
Floral is huge this year and is always ideal for a retro look. Opt for floral wallpaper, but remember to keep it simple and don't overdo it. It's not just about the walls though. You can even mix and match floral prints throughout your colour scheme by introducing more and more through your soft furnishings.
Wrought Iron Furniture
You may think this is just for the garden, but by bringing wrought iron furniture indoors and using as a living room coffee table for example you can instantly add vintage appeal to your home.
